Alex Koller began playing the viola in his 6th grade beginner orchestra class. Back in his hometown of Orlando, Florida, he had the privilege of studying with John Adams for 6 years. Today, he studies with Parker Quartet violist Jessica Bodner. Alex enjoyed six seasons with the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra, including three as principal violist of the Symphonic Orchestra. Previously, he was named an FSYO Concerto Competition Winner and a National YoungArts Foundation Winner (Honorable Mention), as well as served principal positions at the All-State level. Alex attended the Boston University Tanglewood Institute in 2015 and in the following year studied with Ying Quartet violist Phillip Ying at the Bowdoin International Music Festival. As a member of the National Youth Orchestra of the USA in 2017, he performed under the baton of Marin Alsop on a tour spanning NPR’s “From the Top”, Carnegie Hall, Mexico, Ecuador, and Colombia. Last summer, he returned to NYO-USA on tour to Taiwan, China, and South Korea with conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and soloist Jean-Yves Thibaudet. Alex is currently a Harvard College freshman living in Wigglesworth H (the best entryway!).
